Holy Armor

Psalm 91:1-16

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers. And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion, and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation.”

Hey Friend, have you ever played that “Trust Game” you know the one where you stand with your arms out straight to your sides like you are forming the letter T then you have someone stand behind you and you fall backwards trusting them to catch you before you hit the floor.

Do you have that kind of trust in life?  It seems like a silly moment, but I was working in a large attic a few weeks ago and balancing walking back and forth across the joists.  Let’s just say that perhaps I am not the most graceful, balanced or coordinated person.  But it wasn’t too bad until….

I reached upward, was doing something, and lost my balance and began to fall backwards.  I caught myself and to everyone’s relief I did not poke a hole through the ceiling below.  But in the moment, part of the reflex I have trained myself to have is to immediately thank Jesus.  To thank Him for catching me.

It reminds me of Psalm 91:11-12 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. (Or in my case against rock… sheetrock that is) [and yes you can groan right now]

That Moment made me think, of all the near misses I have had in my life, of all the things that could have gone wrong, of all the car accidents that my God has saved me from of all the falls that could have been so much worse.  What about you? How many incidents has God prevented in your life, how many things has God saved you from? Why don’t you take a moment right now and give Him thanks.

God has surrounded us with his angels (Hebrews 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?) And I wonder how many things we have been protected from that we were never even aware of.

But an awareness of this protection also gives us a faith to climb higher, to walk the tight rope of faith.  To stand up for our convictions to hold to our integrity for we know the arms that will catch us if we fall.  Do you trust God to catch you? Think of the kind of life you will live as you learn to trust him more!

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for all the ways you have been watching over me throughout my life.  Help me to trust you in each and every moment.  And let that trust lead me into following your will for my life in greater measure knowing that with you I cannot lose.

Amen.

Point to Ponder: How much has God really protect me from in my life?  How many events has God prevented in my life to protect me that I don’t even know about?

Verse to Memorize and Meditate on: Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Application: Thank God today for protecting you, and make a habit to thank him for every fall, failure, accident that he prevents in your life.
