Isaiah 40:28-31
The Lost art of Silence(Not finished)

Intro: “Why Wait?”

God invites us to wait on Him
Isaiah 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
Hebrews 4:15 speaks of Jesus and reminds us: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
Mathew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Silence Our Mouths
Isaiah 40:31 but those wait upon the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

  • Learn from Others
James 1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

Matthew 12:36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

1 Peter 4:11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Proverbs 17:28 says Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues

Psalm 131:1 My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.

  • Learn from Ourselves

Silence our Meetings
Isaiah 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall
Information is power, some try to gain power by gaining information, some try to maintain power by controlling information.
We listen to every person with a camera or a keyboard.
Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Much like the physical couch potato with the swelling waistline we are abundant in consumption and lazy in application of thought and digestion so that our own heads are swollen with the pride of what we think to be knowledge.  We have knowledge without understanding.
Isaiah 42:20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.”
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
Ecclesiastes 7:21 Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you—
Deuteronomy 13:3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Deuteronomy 13:6-8 6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them.

Silence Our Minds
2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Psalm 91:1 KJV He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
Colossians 2:3 says “In whom (Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

Conclusion
Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
